How Our Table Began

Our Table began with a simple idea: food can bring people together and help build stronger communities.

In 2024, Food First NL and Stella’s Circle were chosen by the City of St. John’s through a public RFP process. The City asked for ideas to reuse an underused community space on the ground floor of the affordable housing building at 77 Charter Avenue.

Together, the two organizations shared a clear vision. They wanted to create a welcoming community food space. It would be a place where people could gather around food, learn together, and feel comfortable. This included people living in the building, in Pleasantville, and across the city.

Built With Community

For more than 18 months, Food First NL and Stella’s Circle worked with community members to design and build Our Table. People shared ideas, needs, and hopes for what the space could become.

The space went through major renovations. What was once a basic meeting room is now a flexible, welcoming place. It was designed to support food access, learning, and connection.

Today, Our Table reflects the people who helped shape it.

A Shared Partnership

Our Table is co-run by Stella’s Circle and Food First NL.

Stella’s Circle is a social justice organization that champions growth and transformation through housing, mental health, and employment services. Food First NL works to advance the right to food in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Each organization brings different strengths. At Our Table, they work together to support:

  • A welcoming, low-barrier space

  • Food as a way to build connection and dignity

  • Learning and sharing in the community

  • Strong local food systems

This partnership helps Our Table respond to everyday community needs while also supporting long-term change.

Why the Name “Our Table”

The name Our Table was chosen with care.

A table is a place where people gather. It is where meals are shared, conversations happen, and people look out for one another. Our Table reflects this idea. The space belongs to the community and everyone is welcome.

Accessibility & Inclusion Statement

Our Table is committed to being a welcoming and accessible space. We work to reduce barriers related to cost, mobility, and comfort. If you have accessibility needs or questions, we encourage you to contact us so we can support your visit.
